BARRICADE IS THERE TO SAFEGUARD OUR LIVES

Dear Residents,

I wrote a response to the article that appeared in the NST yesterday on Giblet. Today, they have published my response (but a cut down, milder and edited version) on Page 4 of the Streets in the NST (Streets, July 9). I am reproducing the article for your reading.

We have also spoken to some of the shop owners who had appeared in the same picture as the kniving Giblet. He had managed to get them to appear in the same picture as them without letting them know what he was actually up to.

Such trickery will only make him look more stupid. These shop owners who are clearly supporting the residents are now more weary of him including the new operator of the TEJAS restaurant and they will shun him from now on.

He has 'served' us a two weeks notice via the NST but we will not compromise our position and will stay firm on this - rest assured!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I refer to the article “Threat to tear down illegal barricades” (Street, July 8).

This so-called "feud" has been on-going since we made the move towards becoming a gated and guarded community, which was done out of a need to protect ourselves.

USJ 11 has the highest crime rate in Subang before we made that move and we know the law is not on our side as it had not help to protect us and our families.

We were left with no choice. We had to do something or let the situation deteriorate.

How could we continue to allow women coming out of the homes and getting their handbags snatched and end up seriously injured?

Cars were being stolen right under our noses. Houses were broken into and valuables stolen. Some have had their arms almost severed during the robbery.

How can we possibly live with the possibility of rapists harming our family? What about victims who have ended up in coma after being injured by robbers? Can you tolerate all these?

Why not find out how many people are actually supporting the move to remove the barricade? Will tearing down what we have successfully put up solve anything?

There are two new businesses that have just started in the same area. And they are thriving - so how do you explain that?

Dear NST,

Your streets publication is already picking up momentum and acceptance among the residents of USJ. Together we had organized a family day in MPSJ and I rendered that as a successful event after many hours of planning between the RA and NST and there are plans to jointly organize more events on the drawing board.

Thanks to your aggressive marketing
team under Datuk Tony. However, after reading the report published I felt that you guys are loop sided and the way the photos are taken, it gives a false impression of the community caging a bunch of monkeys or another group of retarded inmates as reported in the Star paper entitled "The Horror Story".

Your reporter has definitely derailed the good work of your marketing team and has lost the trust we had tried so hard to established.

I begin to doubt the true intention of your streets publication as unveiled to us in your presentation to the RA sometime ago by your dynamic marketing team.

Was it intended to hurt the feelings of the residents and excite them to gain market share or is this your strategy to penetrate the market enjoyed widely by The Star?

However it is never too late to make amend and I invite your team to visit us again and conduct another coverage and perhaps interview some of the residents and traders for their comments.

Please take some photos of the many posts without gate that allow vehicle to gain without much hassle which you may have already experienced during your last visit.

Dear Mr Ng,

I am not sure how much clearer I can be. We did not mean to offend anyone with our report. Our duty is to report the issue, we DO NOT take sides. As such, I am disappointed with your accusations.

We have endeavoured to also include the comments from your side, first by publishing your comments in the same story and secondly, by publishing the letter by your advisor Mr Jeffrey Khoo a day later.

I have also told you when you called me that I would send a reporter to speak to you and your members and fellow residents for all of you to present your side of the story.

I believe my reporter Dawn Chan called you on Friday to arrange a meeting with you but you were unavailable. Subsequently, another reporter, Nura, attended your kenduri session and you spoke to her about the issue.

Streets strongly believes in forging good ties with all the communities (hence the family day) and we try to highlight as much as possible issues raised by residents.

I am very sorry that you feel we have not been fair to you. My reporters and I can only do our jobs to the best of our abilities.

I do hope you will continue to invite us to your events and bring to our attention any problems faced by the community.

Sincerely,
Chan Cheng Tuan
Editor, Streets

Dear Ms. Chan,

We thank you for your explanation and reply and we look forward to your support in the future.

However, I would like to make this statement 'a picture says a thousand words'. The picture you have allowed to go to print has most certainly skewed the minds of people who read that article - a deliberate part on your reporter to get his/her point across no doubt.

When that picture was taken, there were at least four gates that were manned and opened. And there was one just directly opposite that gate some 40 yards away. This picture manipulation does not seem to indicate that the article was written in fair manner. That is our view which has most certainly upset us. Also, I like to point out the article state that the "shopkeepers" but there was only one in the picture! Where were the rest of the "shopkeeperS"???

These are pertinent points which I believe should be pointed out to you. Getting our story means we have to go on defensive after the damage has been done. I can only say that this article is offensive, manipulative and most certainly skewed to give the impression that indeed we, the Resident Association, do not take the shopkeepers needs into account which obviously is not the case. Please come and do a site visit for yourself and you will see at least 4 entrances are accessible into the shop areas during business hours..

As far as we are concern, Giblet's food is not that great and his price exorbitant - hence his fate of his business going down. He has other agenda and it is most certainly not food nor business!

By the way, your comment and all the replies will be going into our blog - just to show we do not have any thing to hide. Please check it out if you have the time at www.usjeleventrees.blogspot.com..

Thank you.
